His musical career spanned two nations and over fifty years as a pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader and producer well loved in Filipino and American circles. A two-time lifetime achievement awardee, Emil has been known for his uncompromising and strict adherence to musical principles. He is considered by many as one of the greatest musicians the Philippines has ever produced. Emil is also known as the “Father of Philippine Jazz Piano” owing his unique piano style to the likes of influences George Shearing, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and Filipino jazz greats like Angel Pena, Romy Katindig and others.

Among Emil’s Achievements:

JazzPhil-USA Lifetime Achievement Award, 2006 L.A.’s Celebrity Chronicle's Lifetime Achievement Award, 2004 Asia Magazine's pick as one of Asia's Top Jazz Artists, 1971 Committee of Arts for Television award, Manila 1951, 1952 and 1954 Aliw Award (national award for excellence in Arts and Entertainment, Manila) for Best Jazz Performer, 1983 and Best Musical Director, 1985 Cecil Award for Best Musical Director, Manila Philippines, 1978
